Commercial Roofs in Extreme Heat

Empire Roofing professionals ensuring a commercial property is protected from the elements.

Every summer, commercial roofs across the nation are exposed to temperatures far hotter than the air outside. While the forecast may show 100°F, the surface of a dark commercial roof can easily exceed 160°F, placing tremendous stress on roofing materials day after day.

Most building owners don't notice the effects until a leak develops or an expensive repair becomes unavoidable. Understanding how heat affects your roofing system can help prevent unexpected downtime and extend the life of your investment.

What Happens to a Roof During Extreme Heat?

Commercial roofing systems naturally expand as temperatures rise and contract as they cool overnight. This daily cycle may seem insignificant, but over thousands of heating and cooling cycles it begins to wear on the roofing system.

Common issues include:

Common issues that occur when extreme heat hits your commercial roof.
  • Membrane shrinkage

  • Flashing separation

  • Open seams

  • Cracked sealants

  • Increased movement around penetrations

  • Premature aging of roofing materials

UV Rays Are Just as Damaging as the Heat

Sunlight does more than raise temperatures.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation gradually breaks down roofing materials, causing them to become brittle over time.

Without regular maintenance, UV exposure can lead to:

Importance of roof maintenance for your commercial property
  • Surface cracking

  • Membrane deterioration

  • Sealant failure

  • Reduced waterproofing performance

  • Shortened roof lifespan

HVAC Equipment Makes the Problem Worse

Summer places HVAC systems under maximum demand.

The constant vibration from rooftop equipment, combined with increased foot traffic from service technicians, can damage roofing systems if proper walk pads and flashing details are not maintained.

Routine inspections should include:

HVAC Maintenance is important for roof leak preventions.
  • HVAC curbs

  • Pipe penetrations

  • Electrical conduit supports

  • Drainage around equipment

  • Roof traffic areas

Signs Your Commercial Roof May Be Suffering From Heat Stress

Watch for these warning signs:

Signs your roof may be suffering from heat stress
  • Bubbling or blistering membranes

  • Open seams

  • Cracked sealants

  • Ponding water after storms

  • Loose flashing

  • Interior ceiling stains

  • Increased cooling costs

Preventative Maintenance Pays for Itself

The most cost-effective roof repair is the one you never have to make. Scheduling a professional roof inspection during the summer allows minor deficiencies to be corrected before they become major water intrusion issues.

A preventative maintenance program can:

The most cost-effective roof repair is the one you never have to make
  • Extend roof life by years

  • Reduce emergency repair costs

  • Improve building energy efficiency

  • Protect tenant operations

  • Preserve manufacturer warranties

Don't Wait Until the Next Storm

Heat damage often remains hidden until heavy rain exposes weak points in the roofing system.

If your building hasn't had a professional roof inspection this year, now is one of the best times to identify potential problems before they become costly repairs.

Celebrating Loyalty and Legacy This Holiday Season

As the holidays arrive and the year winds to a close, Empire Roofing embraces one of our most meaningful traditions. It’s a moment that reaches far beyond end-of-year celebrations. It’s a tribute to loyalty, perseverance, craftsmanship, and the people who built the foundation of our company.

Every holiday season, we gather to honor employees who have reached a rare milestone in today’s world: 10 years of service with Empire Roofing. And with that achievement comes a symbol that has become deeply woven into our culture — a Rolex watch.

Where the Tradition Began

More than four decades ago, when Empire Roofing was just getting started, founders Ronnie and Sandra McGlothlin made a simple promise rooted in gratitude. Ronnie made a deal with two foremen during those early, uncertain days: Stay with me for 10 years, and I’ll buy you a Rolex.
It was never meant to be a grand tradition. Just a gesture heartfelt, personal, and made long before Empire Roofing grew into the industry-leading company it is today.

Little did Ronnie know that Empire Roofing would expand across multiple states…
That hundreds would join the mission…
And that his small promise would become a defining part of our culture.

A Tradition That Lives On

Now 43+ years, and that simple pledge has transformed into one of the most cherished honors in our company’s history.

Today, more than 350 Empire Roofing team members have earned their Rolex milestone — a tribute not just to tenure, but to resilience, workmanship, and unwavering dedication to the Empire family.

This year, we proudly added 22 more names to that remarkable list.

Each watch is more than a gift. It’s a story. A decade of sunrises on job sites. Countless roofs restored, repaired, and rebuilt. Early mornings, late hours, safety meetings, laughs shared, challenges overcome, and goals accomplished. It represents time invested not just in a career, but in a company that continues to grow because of its people.

The Heart of Empire: Our People

Empire Roofing’s strength has never been defined by buildings or equipment. It has always been, and will always be, defined by the people who show up every day with grit, skill, and pride.

The Rolex tradition is our way of saying:
Your time matters. Your loyalty matters. You matter.

As we celebrate this season, we also celebrate the culture of commitment that Ronnie and Sandra built — a culture that continues to thrive across every Empire Roofing office today.

Looking Ahead

With each year, the Empire family grows, and so does our appreciation for the individuals who make our mission possible. The Rolex milestone is a reminder of where we came from... and the future we continue to build together.

To the 22 employees joining the Rolex legacy this year, and to the 350+ who came before you:
Congratulations. Thank you. And welcome to a tradition that will always be at the heart of Empire Roofing.

From our entire team, we wish everyone a safe, joyful, and restful holiday season.

Here’s to another year of excellence, commitment, and building an Empire that stands the test of time.

Safety, Education & Appreciation for Our Field Crews

New Safety Quarterly Program

At Empire Roofing, safety isn’t just a requirement—it’s our culture. This quarter, we’re proud to launch a new quarterly field crew program designed to keep our teams better informed, better prepared, and fully supported.

Why We Started This Program

We know our crews work in demanding conditions every day, and their safety and morale are top priorities. This program has two main goals:

  • Ongoing Safety Education – Keeping every team member up to date with the latest practices, tools, and safety protocols.

  • Recognition & Appreciation – Rewarding their hard work with a well-deserved lunch and refreshments out in the field.

Safety First with Juan Villegas

Our Safety Specialist, Juan Villegas, visited each crew on-site to share important safety updates, discuss potential improvements, and address any questions or concerns. His talks ensure our teams stay informed and equipped to do their jobs safely and effectively.

Collaboration Across Departments

Marketing Director Sergio Martinez worked alongside Juan and the Safety Team to help develop this program, making sure the educational content was engaging and easy to understand. By combining safety expertise with creative communication, we’re building a program that not only educates but also inspires.

More Than Just Lunch

While the meals and cold drinks were a hit, the biggest win was the strengthened connection between departments and crews. These visits show that we value our teams not just for the work they do, but for the dedication, professionalism, and pride they bring every day.

Looking Ahead

This is just the beginning. With this program running every quarter, we’re committed to ensuring our crews remain well-equipped, well-informed, and well-recognized.

Stay tuned for photos from our recent visits—they capture the teamwork, appreciation, and commitment that make Empire Roofing what it is today.
